At one point, Wagner released his thirty-nine picks for the best horror works (thirteen in each of three categories, natch, including supernatural, science fiction horror, and non-supernatural horror). However, his legacy survives for those who are willing to look a little deeper into the genre than merely what volume saw publication last week or what is currently running in the top ten slot for a given horror category. Karl Edward Wagner’s name is perhaps less known these days than during the height of his career as a novelist, editor, and publisher (his Carcosa Press brought plenty of fun, pulp horror and fantasy material back into print from the 1930s/1940s) some thirty years ago.
